Proceed to the centre of the village and turn left. Take the first left and this will take you to the main road at the roundabout. Turning left at the roundabout takes you in the Exeter direction and joins the a 38, turning right at the roundabout takes you in the Plymouth direction and joins the a38 . The Turtley corn mill gastro pub is in the Plymouth direction towards Avonwick, as is the Avon Inn . Both nice pubs with gardens . Continue further along that road and you will reach Totnes. A bustling town and river point. Take a ferry to Dartmouth and steam train or bus to return. Dartmouth is a super place to spend time . Also from Totnes, roads lead to Torbay, Kingsbridge and Salcombe. Great for days out and a pleasant drive. Ugborough is also in the Plymouth direction and has a super restaurant, the Ship Inn. The same route also leads to Ivybridge and a huge Tesco. Access to Dartmoor is near Tesco at Cornwood. Beyond that and 10 miles down the A 38 is Plymouth and Cornwall.
Turn left out of the hotel and drive up the hill and out of the village on the back road towards the Avon Dam. Great walks to be had there. See more detail in the walk described.
Buckfast Abbey is 5 miles further towards Exeter. A fascinating place and interesting history . Beyond Buckfast is Ashburton. Dartmoor and Widecombe in the Moor can also be accessed from Ashburton and 15 miles past Ashburton up the A38 is Exeter. Of course Exeter is worth a visit and you can easily spend a day in and around the city and beyond. We have constructed self-drive tours of the area for you to read and hope you may enjoy them. They are in the quiet Carriage.
